Black Friday SIM only offers: the last deals still available on each network

Black Friday SIM only offers

With Black Friday 2018 long over, most the SIM only deals launched by each network expire soon. Here's what's still available. SIM Sherpa is your trusty guide. Last updated: 3rd December 2018

This year's Black Friday SIM only offers are expiring fast

Only some sales are still going

This year, we've seen Black Friday sales stretching for a number of weeks. And there's still a chance to pick up a real deal if you're quick.

We've listed the offers below which are still available and the ones which have now expired. And divided our guide into sections:

Order by 4th December and you can get a healthy 2GB for just £6.50 a month with Plusnet Mobile, who use the EE network:

If you have Sky TV at home, you could have benefited from from their double data offer, which is now expired:

Even though it's not actually a Black Friday / Cyber Monday specific offer, SMARTY's 2GB SMALL plan is very competitive in this price bracket to and uses the Three network for signal:

This isn't actually a specific Black Friday or Cyber Monday offer but iD's SIM only plan below is still the cheapest on the market for this amount of data:

If you've got an extra £1.50 a month, Plusnet Mobile gets you 2GB instead, alongside 1500 minutes and unlimited texts (uses EE's network, order by 4th Dec). This is a genuinely terrific value deal:

And it also beats the next nearest deal from Virgin Mobile with 1GB data, 1500 minutes and unlimited texts for £7 a month (12-month contract).

3GB data or more

As part of their "Black Tag" event ending 4th December, you can get 3GB 4GB data, 500 mins and unlimited texts for just £8 a month on a 1-month deal with iD Mobile (check signal near you via Three's network here).

As well as having an excellent price, the deal gets you iD's usual benefits of data rollover, spending caps and the flexibility of only being on a 1-month contract.

Another strong contender in this category is Plusnet Mobile's £8.50 3.5GB deal, which gets you unlimited minutes and texts too, using the EE network, on a 1-month contract:

Or if you're willing to pay a bit more to get a bit more, for an extra £1 a month vs iD, Virgin's discounted £13 £9 plan with 5GB, 2500 mins and unlimited texts is another decent option, although you'll need to commit to a 12-month contract for this:

You'll need to be quick though as Virgin's deal ends 4th December too.

Price-wise this £13 £9 a month 5GB deal from Virgin Mobile (12-month contract, order by end 4th December) comes top our best-rated deals available over the Black Friday period in this category:

On top of the 5GB, you'll also get 2500 minutes, unlimited texts, as well as Virgin's usual benefits of superfast 4G via the EE network, data rollover and the ability to change your plan month-to-month.

As part of their Black Tag event lasting until 4th December, iD are giving away an extra 2GB free with this plan, which is now the second most competitive for this amount of data:

Or they've added this hidden offer for the same price, ending on 4th Dec. Watch out for those minutes though, if you use more than 300 a month, you could end up needing to pay for extra:

Tesco Mobile also discounted their 5GB plan in line with these deals too, saving a modest £12 a year, if you were after a provider that uses the O2 network. But this has now expired:

If you're after a SIM only deal with massive amounts of data, have a look at Virgin Mobile's £15 a month plan with 24GB data, 2500 minutes and unlimited texts (12-month contract), which leads on price and benefits.

Join Virgin Mobile and you'll get 4G provided by EE with speeds up to 70 Mbps. You also get to keep unused data each month to use in the next month. Offer ends 4th December, so be quick.

Tesco slashed the price of their 20GB plan by £104 a year (£8.50 a month) to bring it into contention in this category too but this has now expired:

Virgin's main other competitor for this amount of data is Three, whose £17 a month 30GB data deal gets you unlimited minutes and texts, upgrades with easyJet and unlimited streaming on apps like Netflix and Apple Music:

Even though it's a little pricier than the others, EE's 25GB for £20 deal is worth a look if you've been waiting to join a main network:

As another of the big four networks, O2's 20GB for £20 is worth a look to especially as it currently gets you 6 months of free Netflix. This deal expires on 6th December:

Even after other mobile providers have been slashing prices around them, Three's deal is still cheaper. And it's been around long before the Black Friday / Cyber Monday period:

Price-wise, the closest anyone else comes is Virgin's triple data offer, which is £1 a month more expensive but does get you 15GB extra though. This expires on 4th December:

These kind of high-data allowance SIMs are where the other main networks are really competing on price for your custom. Here's what Vodafone, EE and O2 have available in this range:

All of which are beaten on price by Three's remarkable unlimited data deal too, which expires on 3rd December:

In the run up to Black Friday, we'd said it might be worth waiting it out to see what Three would launch and we're happy to say we were right. They launched a brilliant £20 for unlimited data deal:

Prior to the offer, this deal had been priced at £27 a month (for around 3 months) and £34 a month before that. So it's a genuine deal. But you now need to be very quick as it ends on 3rd December.

Three's 4G network now reaches 98% of the population (check your local signal here). You'll also get some excellent benefits with it, including inclusive worldwide roaming, free easyJet upgrades.

If you're not fussed with unlimited data, Three's next strongest deal is their existing pre-Black Friday 30GB for £17 deal, which comes in £3 cheaper:

As well as the benefits above, this plan comes with Three's unlimited streaming Go Binge scheme, which lets you use selected apps like Netflix and Apple Music without using up data.

As predicted BT Mobile launched their Black Friday SIM only sale on 16th November and there were some excellent combinations of extra data, reduced prices and huge Reward Cards, which worked out best if you have BT Broadband (all prices below are for broadband customers):

For us, the very best deal was their £12 £10 plan with 3GB 5GB data, because not only did it have extra data and a reduced price but it let you claim a pre-paid Mastercard with £60 on it (which was worth a record 6 months of the basic cost of the deal):

The other standout deals were 1GB 2GB data for £10 £8 a month (claim a £50 Reward Card, worth 6.25x the plan's basic cost):

Or there was this hidden deal for £18 £16 plan with 10GB 15GB data< (£80 Reward Card):

Overall, BT had an excellent range of deals spread over prices and data amounts to fit anyone. But you needed to add £5 a month to prices if you're not a broadband customer with BT. We still recommended having a look at their full range of SIMs before making your choice.

As we predicted, EE have focussed their Black Friday SIM only offers on plans, with big data allowances. These are genuinely good deals that we've not seen bettered during the year:

Throughout the year, the best you can normally hope for at £20 a month is 20GB. And prior to this offer, you could only get 10GB for that price. We'd argue the above is the best value deal on EE.

We've not seen a lower price this year for 40GB on this deal either. Prior to the offer, it'd cost £35:

If you're after an obscene amount of data, this offer has the largest amount we've seen on EE all year (previous high was 40GB):

If you're after a SIM only plan with less than 5GB data, we wouldn't hold out hope for EE including these in their Black Friday sale. We've rarely seen this type of plan on offer at EE.

Each of the offers above lasts until 4th December. And we're not expecting any extra deals to be added on top, although we've been wrong before.

We like giffgaff and you can already get £5 free credit with them when you join via our special invite page here. But realistically, their SIM only prices probably weren't going to get much lower.

They have to be careful about bold giveaways for new customers, because having only 30-day plans means all their existing customers can move premanently to any new deal too!

For that reason, Black Friday has usually been a pretty muted even on giffgaff in the past, and we weren't anything dramatic to happen this year either. There were offers on phones though.

If you want to join giffgaff on a SIM only, your best shot at squeezing some extra value out of your deal is to use our free £5 credit offer here, with your first £10 top up or goodybag purchase.

We knew a few networks would massively jump the gun and launch sales early, cunningly called "Black Tag" to get round advertising regulations! And this year it was iD Mobile who went first:

As predicted, iD Mobile have been a strong candidate to pick up a SIM only plan cheaply with a modest amount of data during the Black Friday period:

But there's also two similar deals in the mid-range of data allowances too, although they've not got a huge amount of minutes. The second deal is hidden and not advertised on the main part of iD's website:

All deals have iD's usual benefits of spending caps, data rollover and flexible 30-day contracts.

The main bulk of iD's offers in the event have on smartphone contracts rather than SIMs. That's where their headline claim of savings up to £330 comes from.

We're quite proud we almost managed to predict O2's Black Friday SIM only deals perfectly. They're all focussed on large data allowances.

We expect this offer to be O2's most popular. It's no better value than we've seen at other times in the year but also O2 have never gone cheaper than £20 for 20GB either:

They've also published a couple of competitive plans with absolutely huge data allowances too:

Each of the deals above lets you claim 6 months of free Netflix from O2 too, even if you already pay for it, which adds around £45 of value to the deals (based on Netflix costing £7.99 a month).

If you're after less data, there are a couple of other promotions on O2. We'd point out that after 12 months, the amount of data in these deals drops to 1GB and 10GB respectively:

OFFERS EXPIRED

We had Sky Mobile down as a hard network to read because they rarely put their SIM only plans in any kinds of promotion, and they certainly don't tend to discount them.

We'd predicted they'd launch a double data offer for Black Friday and that's what the had from 9th November to 29th November. These deals are no longer available:

Note both these deals were for people who have Sky TV at home only.

Realistically, Sky's offers weren't that generous this year. It'll be interesting to see what they do for Black Friday 2019.

We'd count SMARTY as one of the low-cost mobile providers that don't really have any room to manoeuvre in terms of reducing their SIM only plan prices any further.

And it seems to be the case in what they launched over this Black Friday period, which was nothing. Just their regular plans were/are available:

If you do join SMARTY, they do have a decent scheme for referring your friends and getting them to join SMARTY too. Until 31st Dec, you and your friend will get a free month's plan each and you'll get a £10 Amazon voucher.

Having tracked Tesco Mobile offers for a number of years, they surprised us by discounting existing SIMs, which we didn't think they'd do.

There were 3x deals in their Black Friday event, which lasted from 19th November until 2nd December and saw prices on SIMs lowered between £11 - £104 a year. They were:

Each plan got you the normal Tesco Mobile benefits of coverage via the O2 network, Clubcard points, and Family Perks for taking out multiple deals.

Overall, if you'd been waiting to see what offers would come along before ordering from Tesco Mobile, we wouldn't have been disappointed. They were the strongest offers we'd seen from them in 2018.

We couldn't fault Virgin Mobile for fully embracing the spirit of Black Friday this year. They've still got 3x plans on offer, even though their huge 200GB deal here has now expired:

They seemed to be in a bit of a scrap with Three, whose best deal for £20 is still available, giving you unlimited data instead of 100GB (order by 3rd December):

If you don't need that much data, you can save money with Virgin's other promotional deals, which lead the pack on price for each of their data amounts, and don't end until 4th Dec:

All of the above come with Virgin's regular benefits of 4G speeds up to 70 Mbps via the EE network, data rollover and free WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger data.

A bit like EE and O2, Vodafone tend to use their reputation as a large, reliable mobile network to sell their SIM only deals, rather than huge promomotions and bargain basement prices.

This year, their limited offers tend to be on one or two of their plans at most, usually with 20GB data or above. These have tended just to be a simple promotional price, rather than anything more complicated.

For Black Friday 2018, they've not added any extra offers. Their current deals are the most competitive on price once you get into the 20GB+ range:

Types of offer for Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Here are the types of offers we thought were likely to launch on SIM only - and what did

Black Friday banner

Expect plenty of black

If you'd been thinking of waiting until Black Friday to sign up to the best possible SIM only deal, we thought you'd find it useful to know the types of to expect.

Based on previous years, we'd said there'd be 4 main categories of offer:

1) Money-off discounts
2) Gifts and rewards
3) Promotional tariffs (extra data)
4) Free months where you pay no monthly charge

In the sections below, we pick through each type of offer and list where you'd be able to find that type of deal.

1) Out-and-out discounts off the monthly cost of your SIM

Discounted Black Friday SIM only deals

Some networks will just reduce their SIMs' cost

Black Friday is supposed to be about discounts, and getting things cheaper than normal. We expected a large number of mobile networks to offer outright discounts against the 'usual price' of their SIM only plans.

This is usually the most valuable type of offer, particularly if you want to join one of the traditionally more-expensive networks. But we'd advise a bit of caution when choosing your deal.

The reason we've said 'usual prices' above is that you sometimes see providers subtly increase particular plans in the run up to Black Friday so that they can be slashed during the event (called price establishing).

Our advice is to use price comparison tools like ours to compare all deals at once, rather than be lured in by a particular plan that seems like it's got a huge discount.

Networks that discounted plans in 2018:Three logoBT logoEE logoO2 Mobile logoTesco Mobile logoVirgin Mobile logoVodafone logo

2) Extra gifts or rewards with your SIM only deal

Amazon / iTunes voucher offer

Some will offer additional extras like vouchers

We thought we'd see more networks offer free gifts, rewards or vouchers alongside their SIM only plans but this didn't really happen. Only BT really did this.

As long as the gift is genuinely valuable and doesn't cost you more, these can be good deals to pick up.

From previous years, these have tended to be things like Amazon or iTunes vouchers or perhaps pre-paid cash cards from Mastercard or similar.

Mobile networks like these offers because it avoids them discounting the overall price of their deals. Often you'll have to jump through a few hoops to actually get the reward though.

Our advice with gifts and rewards is to check you'd actually ever use the reward and that you're not paying more than you would normally just to get the reward!

Networks with free gifts and extras:BT logo

3) Extra data for the same price / one-off promotional plans

Black Friday SIM with extra data

Some will offer extra data or minutes for the same price

This was the most common type of deal available during the Black Friday period on SIM only, because it avoids networks having to drastically cut their prices.

Look out for deals with boosted data, minutes or texts than what's regularly available with a provider. We expected double data, triple data or even quadruple data on a limited number of plans, usually 12-month ones.

This is a favourite type of promotion among the cheaper networks because it means they don't have to cut the prices of their already low-cost deals. They can just give you more for the same price.

For customers, it's great too as it's a chance to get more for your money. We'd recommend using our comparison tool to compare all deals against one another once Black Friday comes.

Networks with one-off and boosted plans:BT Mobile logoEE Mobile logoiD Mobile logoO2 Mobile logoPlusnet Mobile logoSky Mobile logoVirgin Mobile logo

4) SIM deals with a number of months free or half price

Three's Black Friday offer last year

Three's offer two years ago

The final type of SIM only deal we expected to see during the Black Friday period is probably the least common: where networks give you a number of free months.

Naturally you're only ever going to see this type of promotion on 12-month SIM only contracts, because on shorter 1-month deals, you could just take the free months and then do a runner!

With these types of deals, you should calculate the average monthly cost of a deal over 12 months minus how many months free you get. But remember you'll continue paying the full rate once your 12 months is up.

We hadn't expected many networks to offer this type of deal (we only ever seen Three offer it a couple of years ago). In the end, nobody did.

Most likely networks: Nobody did this!
