Useful information about Talkmobile’s phone contracts

If you want to join on a Talkmobile phone contract right away, your only option is to join via a third party reseller like Fonehouse. This is actually a good option as they offer cheaper deals than Talkmobile can.

Talkmobile aren’t really set up for selling phone deals. You can only join one by staying on a SIM only contract for 6 months to then upgrade. They are a good option if you’ve been rejected for a Vodafone contract.

Either way you join on a 24-month contract with the payment for your phone and usage plan (mins, texts, data) on one bill. These offer no way to upgrade early, pay to reduce your bill or change contract length.

And Talkmobile don’t let you switch to a smaller usage plan until your contract is over. You can move to a bigger one if you need, but overall there is a lack of flexibility compared to what other networks offer.

If you take a Talkmobile phone contract via a third party reseller you will have to pass a credit check. This is where they look at your history of making payments to see if you can reliably pay your monthly bill.

Any holes in your credit history could mean you get rejected. If that happens you can join on a SIM only plan and keep up with your payments to upgrade to a phone contract, as there’s no credit checks on these.

Delivery times will depend on the reseller. If you order a phone with Talkmobile it should arrive within 3-4 working days, but it can take longer depending on your location so check their guide here.

Finally, if you’re switching to Talkmobile from another network and want to keep your number you can request a PAC from your old provider and send it to Talkmobile. They’ll then port your number over for you.

Talkmobile use Vodafone’s network to provide call (2G/3G) and data (4G/5G) signal. That means they’re on the joint-largest UK network for calls with excellent 4G data coverage in urban and rural areas.

They offer 5G access in the same 150+ locations as their hosts. Coverage in these locations tends to be decent, but is still only on a street-by-street basis. They’re behind other networks for overall 5G signal.

Typical 4G data speeds sit around 25.9 Mbps according to Opensignal. For 5G, Opensignal and Speedtest measured typical speeds between 100.6 Mbps - 146.19 Mbps with peak speeds up to 315.35 Mbps.

Those are healthy speeds and are more than good enough for most users. And despite being a budget network, Talkmobile do now have WiFi calling. But there’s no way to join on an eSIM yet.
