Your options for roaming on Three
No more limits on how often you can go abroad
Three have just changed what roaming you get included with their SIM only deals and phone contracts. In a nutshell, some include EU roaming while others also include a further 120-odd worldwide countries.
Thankfully, they’ve got rid of the system of giving you a fixed number of daily roaming passes. These would limit you to 14 days per year for example. But they’re now gone and you go as often as you like.
You still can’t just take a Three SIM and move abroad with it. But we think it’s much better getting rid of counting how many days you can go away per year.

EU roaming is included on all Three’s Value plans
If you’re most likely to stick just in Europe for your roaming, you’ll want to take one of Three’s Value plans. These let you use your UK minutes, texts and data in all of these Go Roam in Europe countries.

While you’re away, you’ll be able to call other UK mobile numbers and also any other number in the EU on an unlimited basis. That’s great if you need to call a taxi or book a restaurant.
Data-wise, you can use up to 12GB of your allowance per month while abroad. Only massive data users will find that an issue over a week or two’s holiday. If you need more, you’ll have to buy a Data Passport.

Worldwide roaming comes on Three’s Complete plans
For further flung travel, you now get Go Roam Around The World and Go Roam Around The World Extra countries with all Three’s Complete plans, as well as EU roaming. It’s a total of over 160 destinations.

These let you use up to 12GB of your regular data allowance per month while you’re away (or you can upgrade to unlimited data with one of Three’s Data Passes).
But it’s important to understand only calls to UK numbers are included outside of Europe. Go Roam Around The World doesn’t let you make local calls without paying extra (at these rates).

You can also use Three’s pay as you go to get roaming
There is one final option if you want to get some worldwide and EU roaming included on Three but you’re only going away for a bit, or don’t want to commit to a long contract:
Three’s Pay As You Go SIMs include EU roaming and the slightly shorter list of 22 Go Roam Around The World countries (but not Extra destinations). The list still includes places like the USA and Australia though.
If the sound of pay as you go makes you think of going to the corner shop to load up credit, don’t worry, it’s not like that. You register a card and get a monthly bundle of minutes, texts and data.
The fair usage is the same as the pay monthly options above. And you can even join on eSIM, if you’re in a hurry and need to sort roaming for yourself quickly. We’ve done it ourselves and it worked great.

FAQs about Go Roam
Not on pay monthly. You’ll need to take a Value or Complete plan to get Go Roam, which cost more than Three’s basic Lite plans. You can get Go Roam for free on Pay As You Go though.
Yes in Europe. No in the rest of the world. Bear in mind tethering will help you reach the 12GB fair usage limit more quickly either way.
You’ll get warning texts before you hit your limit. When you do hit it, you’ll be charged at the out-of-allowance rate for data. To avoid this, set yourself a £0 spending cap in your account.
You don’t have to activate it. Your SIM and your account will come all ready to roam. You’ll need to make sure your plan actually includes the benefit though.
Yes but you will need to activate your eSIM while you’re in the UK. You can’t buy and activate a Go Roam eSIM once you’re already abroad.
No. You can still stream on Three’s Go Roam. Though you should note, streaming will quickly use up your monthly 12GB fair usage allowance abroad.
Only if your plan doesn’t include the benefit in the first place. If it doesn’t, you can buy daily passes to roam in the EU or in Three’s worldwide destinations.
No. You will not get Go Roam on Lite plans. You only get it on Pay As You Go, Value and Complete plans, with phones or SIM only.
Go Roam Around The World Extra countries, you only get with Three’s pay monthly Complete plans. Go Roam Around The World countries, you get with Pay As You Go and Complete. There’s no difference while you’re actually in the country.
