How spusu’s international calling works
Every plan gives you some minutes to call EU countries
At the time of writing, every spusu SIM only plan comes with a separate allowance of 500 minutes to call numbers in the EU. Great news if you have friends or family abroad: that’s over 8 hours to talk every month.
The countries you can call include every country in the European Union. So naturally, popular locations for British expats, like Spain, France, Germany and Ireland are all covered by the scheme.
For our full network review of spusu, we tested the service ourselves. You get an obvious separate allowance of EU minutes, which you can monitor in your online account. When you make calls, your total goes down.
In general, we think it’s an excellent little side benefit, with no notable downsides, giving you value on top of already cheap plans. Next, we take you through more details and any limitations, to see if it’s right for you.

You can use the minutes to call landlines or mobiles
The full list of countries you can call is Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French territories in the Indian Ocean, French Guiana, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Martinique, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (including the Canary Islands) and Sweden.
We spoke to a spusu customer agent, who confirmed that calls to both landlines and mobiles are included. But non-geographic (like our 08/09 numbers etc) or premium numbers are naturally not covered.
While you’re roaming within the EU, any calls you make to local numbers will come out of your EU minutes. They’re not covered by the unlimited UK minutes you get with most plans.
It’s essentially a fair usage policy on calls in that sense. But it is 8 hours on the phone. It’s a generous limit.

There are some things that aren’t included
It’s worth knowing that this is only designed for making calls. SMS texts to European numbers aren’t included on spusu. Their section here makes it clear you’ll pay 15p per message to EU phones.
Another important thing to know is that these calls are strictly to EU countries in Europe only. That means non-EU European countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland cost extra to call.
If you ever go over your EU minutes limit on spusu, the ongoing rate of calling EU countries from the UK varies from 10p to 25p, according to their latest price guide. It’s easy to set up a spend cap if you’re worried about that.
But generally, this isn’t something spusu have included to try and trip you up. It’s a well-intentioned added benefit from a European company, which could save you a fair amount if you normal pay for this.

Some of spusu’s low cost competitors do offer similar
It’s pretty rare for UK mobile networks to include international minutes in their plans (read our full guide here). spusu’s inclusive EU calls aren’t unique but they are the most generous as standard.
Lyca Mobile also include at least 100 minutes of calls to EU countries and some extra further flung places too, as standard on all their plans – even the cheapest.
Lebara are very similar. They also throw in at least 100 minutes of EU calls and to some non-EU countries too.
But neither are as generous as spusu’s 500 minutes. And we think the fact that spusu have WiFi calling on the EE network makes Lyca and Lebara worse options for your day-to-day usage too.
