Useful information about Tesco’s phone contracts
Nice flexibility with Tesco’s finance-based contracts
Tesco Mobile offer two different kinds of phone contracts. Most higher-end phones are offered on finance agreements (essentially loans) with your phone’s cost and usage plan (mins, texts, data) billed separately.
This means you can upgrade early by paying off your loan whenever. You don’t have to wait until your contract is over to get a new phone. And you can switch your usage plan up or down each month to suit your needs.
What’s also good is that you can set your contract length to 12, 18, 24 or 36 months to suit your budget. And no matter what, the total amount you pay for your phone stays the same (this isn’t the case on all networks).
The other type they offer are traditional 24-month contracts, where you pay for your phone and usage together over the full 24 months. These are less flexible and tend to only be offered on cheaper phones.

There are some other technical things you should know
To join on any phone contract on Tesco Mobile you’ll have to pass a credit check. This is where your network will look at your credit score and history of making payments to see if you’re a reliable customer.
While we don’t have any insider information, we think it will be harder to pass a credit check for these as Tesco are effectively lending you money to buy the phone off them. So they need to know you’ll be able to pay them back.
If you want to cancel your phone contract early, you’ll have to pay off the rest of your loan and an early termination fee for your usage contract. You can see how they calculate this fee in their guide here.
Tesco will deliver your phone the next working day by DPD if you order before 4pm on a weekday. If you order after 4pm, on the weekend or on a bank holiday it will take a bit longer to arrive (here’s what they say).
Finally, if you want to keep your old number when switching from another network to Tesco you can request a PAC number from your old network and send it to Tesco. After this, they’ll port your number over for you.

Other benefits of being on Tesco Mobile
Excellent coverage, 5G access and other decent benefits
When you join Tesco you’ll get full access to their host network O2’s coverage for calls (2G/3G) and data (4G/5G). That’s definitely a good thing, as their hosts have one of the best blends of signal of any network.
You get 5G in the same 2000+ UK towns and cities as Tesco’s hosts. Signal tends to be quite widespread in these locations, but still only on a street-by-street basis. They’re one of the best for overall 5G coverage.
Typical 4G data speeds sit around 19.3 Mbps according to Opensignal, but we got up to 90 Mbps in our tests. Opensignal and Speedtest measure typical 5G speeds between 75.0 Mbps - 78.88 Mbps and peaks of 208.14 Mbps.
They are on the slowest network for speeds, but they’re still good enough for most users. Their WiFi calling is being rolled out, but is a bit limited for now. And Tesco don’t offer eSIMs yet, but they will soon.
