Three's Lite vs Value vs Complete: are the differences worth it?

Three divide their pay monthly phone and SIM only deals into three main tiers: Lite, Value and Complete. They call this ‘Three Your Way’. There is now also a Lite+ sub-option which comes with no speed caps.

While the idea is to give you more choice, we think it’s actually made it much harder to compare which is right for you. And we don’t think some of the tiers are worth the upgrade.

In the guide below, we take you through what you do and don’t get on tier and whether the benefits are worthwhile.

Lite plans are the lowest-cost way to join Three on a pay monthly deal. You’ll usually pay less per GB than with their other types of plan. For many people, Lite will give you absolutely everything you need.

You get the same Three 4G and 5G coverage as customers on the more expensive tiers, along with unlimited calls and texts, WiFi calling, tethering, eSIM support and access to Three+ rewards.

The main limitation is that Lite plans now have a maximum download speed of 100 Mbps. That is more than enough for HD video, music, video calls and quick app downloads. But in the very fastest 5G areas, you won’t get full usage out of Three’s technology.

You also don’t get any of the inclusive roaming or the device benefits you’d get with the more expensive tiers. When you go abroad, you’ll need to buy one of Three’s Go Roam passes.

For most people, we still think Lite will be the best option. There’s no need to pay extra every single month for roaming you only use occasionally. And the speed cap is above the typical downloads you’d get anyway.

Lite+ is essentially a minor upgrade within Lite. It is identical to Lite but comes with Three’s Full Speed Add-on. This removes the 100 Mbps cap and lets you take full advantage of the fastest speeds on Three’s network.

Depending where you live, that could be substantial or pointless. Independent network testers Opensignal found average 5G download speeds of 187 Mbps on Three, with even higher peaks. It’s the fastest in the UK.

At our latest check, Lite+ plans cost £4 a month more than their Lite equivalent, for the whole length of your contract. But Three only charge £4 a month for a monthly Full Speed Add-on anyway.

So we’d question the point in committing to Lite+. You can just add the monthly Full Speed Add-on to a Lite plan yourself. And if you find you don’t notice a difference, remove it and save yourself £4.

Three’s mid-range phone and SIM only plans are called Value. Their main advantage over Lite and Lite+ is inclusive roaming in 49 Go Roam in Europe destinations.

Roaming-wise, you can use up to 12GB from your regular data allowance while you’re away, together with unlimited calls and texts to UK/EU numbers there. There is no set limit on how many trips you can take.

Three’s current Value plans on SIM only

But Value plans don’t do anything to remove the 100 Mbps download speed cap Three have introduced. You will still need to buy a £4 add-on if you want to get rid of that.

On SIM only, EU roaming is the only advantage over Lite from joining on Value. The other additional benefit is an extended warranty if you take Value on our phone contract (see below).

Based on Three’s ordinary advertised prices, Value plans generally cost around £5 more each month than Lite plans with the same data allowance. That is approximately £60 extra over a year, whether you travel or not.

A 7-day European Go Roam pass currently costs £12. So you’d need around five weeks of European roaming each year before the £60 spent upgrading to Value matches the cost of buying passes separately.

If you only take one or two weeks of European holidays, you’re probably just better off taking Lite and buying the temporary passes. Value only makes sense if you are away a lot or don’t want to be tasked with keep buying passes.

Our exclusive Value SIM only deals

It is still worth checking our exclusive Three Value deals above before deciding. Sometimes we have a better price that does make the leap to Value worth it.

If you take a Value plan with a phone contract, you’ll get an extended warranty on your device. But remember this doesn’t apply if you join on SIM only with a phone bought elsewhere.

The warranty cover lasts for up to 36 months, instead of the conventional 12 or 24 months. That gives you extra reassurance if you intend to keep your phone for several years rather than upgrading as soon as the original contract ends.

This is not phone insurance. It won’t cover theft, loss or accidental damage, and a battery that has naturally deteriorated would not normally qualify. It is intended to cover eligible faults with the device itself.

You can read Three’s extended warranty terms here, including what is covered and how to make a claim. It’s decent but it’s the kind of benefit you’re likely to forget you have. You should ask if you’ll ever use it.

Complete is Three’s highest tier of plan. It includes the European roaming offered by Value but extends it across all three Go Roam bands: Europe, Around the World and Around the World Extra.

That gives you inclusive roaming in more than 160 destinations. You can use up to 12GB of data each month, while worldwide fair-use limits include up to 3,000 minutes and 5,000 texts. Check Three’s current roaming destinations before travelling.

Compare Complete SIM only deals

Complete also includes the Standard Paramount+ plan for the full minimum term of your contract. Three charge Lite, Lite+ and Value customers £9.99 a month to add the same subscription separately.

But don’t upgrade purely because an included subscription sounds appealing. It only represents a saving if you genuinely want Paramount+ and would otherwise have paid for it.

Complete plans still have the standard 100 Mbps speed cap. That’s a bit disappointing. Paying for Three’s most expensive tier does not unlock faster network performance. You still have to buy a separate Full Speed Add-on.

Complete phone plans also include one screen repair during your phone contract. If the display on the eligible phone you bought from Three breaks, you can send it to their repair partner.

This only applies to phone contracts, not SIM only. The repair is not completely free either. At our last check, you have to pay a £25 fee directly to Three’s repair partner.

That is still much cheaper than many manufacturer or independent screen repairs, particularly on an expensive flagship phone. But you only get one repair and it must be for the eligible phone bought with that Three contract.

You can read Three’s screen-repair terms and claim instructions here. We think this is actually quite a good benefit. Though again, if you’re paying £10 extra a month just for this, it might not be worth it.

Three’s standard Complete plans generally cost around £5 more each month than Value and £10 more than Lite. That means paying approximately £60 or £120 extra each year respectively.

Complete makes sense if you travel outside Europe regularly using your normal Three phone number and would also pay for Paramount+. Those benefits could comfortably outweigh the higher price for the right person.

Current Complete SIM only plans on Three

But there are now lots of global travel eSIM deals available separately. If you only take one or two long-haul trips each year, buying a temporary eSIM when you need one could work out cheaper than paying extra for Complete every month.

For us, Complete is only worth the upgrade for frequent worldwide travellers or people who will make proper use of Paramount+. Everyone else should compare the annual price difference with the cost of buying a travel eSIM for their individual trips.
