Our cookies explained

Here's what cookies are and why websites use them

You can delete cookies stored on your computerHere's how

(opens in new window)

A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your device when you visit a website or application.

Your web browser (for example Google Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox) sends cookies back to the website each time you visit it so they can remember things like preferences.

Cookies are useful to both you and the website you're visiting, and they do lots of different jobs. For example, they enable you to move between our web pages efficiently, they remember your preferences when you visit again and generally improve your experience when browsing websites.

They can also help to ensure that adverts you see online are more relevant to you and your interests. Although SIM Sherpa doesn't use cookies for this.

Cookies last for different lengths of time depending on the job they do. There are session cookies and persistent cookies:

Session cookies only last for your online session and disappear from your device when you close your browser.

Persistent cookies stay on your device after the browser has been closed and last for the period of time specified in the cookie

We only use two types of cookies on And we let you choose if you want to decline them

Two cookies at SIM Sherpa

We use two types of cookies at, which fall into two categories: analytics and functional.

We explain what each of these cookie types do in the next section.

We give you the choice about which of our cookies you're happy to be stored on your computer. Scroll to the top and press the big "Change settings now" button to manage yours.

If you don't accept all or part of our cookie policy, you're free to carry on using and we'll stop storing cookies on your computer.

The main cookies we use are for measuring which pages have been visited on our website ("analytics cookies")

Google Analytics

Read Google's privacy policy before accepting our analytics cookiesRead privacy policy

We want to be able to tell which of our articles the general public are interested in, so we can write more about what people like, and less about what they don't. That's where a package called Google Analytics comes in.

It measures which pages people enter our website on, where they navigate to and where they leave. It's like a sophisticated version of those old page counters you used to get on websites!

For Google Analytics to work, it needs to store a set of cookies on your computer. These track the pages you visit on our site and make the information available to us in the form of statistics.

Although your specific visit is stored as a "session ID" and you, the visitor, as a "user ID", these are in the form of anonymous numbers, and don't contain personal data we can read.

We don't pass any personal details onto Google Analytics, because we don't take any off you.

But Google could use the information about your web-browsing at in conjunction with other data they have about you via other websites using Google Analytics, Google's own websites like YouTube, and social media to piece together a profile of who you are.

If you're uncomfortable with the above, you should choose to block our analytics cookies and we'll stop downloading Google Analytics cookies when you load a page.

You'll get the same experience as someone who accepts analytics cookies.

Our other cookie type remembers the choices you make at (they're "functionality cookies")

Generic checklist

These remember choices you make

The other cookies we use are known as "functionality" cookies. These remember choices you've made on, so you don't have to make the same choice over and over again and so we can remember things you're interested in.

At the moment, we mainly use this cookie type to remember if you've chosen to enable or disable our analytics cookies. Yes it's weird using a cookie for this if you're declining other cookies but it stops you having to accept or decline them on every page you visit!

We call it sherpacookies. And it's stored as either sherpacookies=accepted or sherpacookies=unaccepted. All it does is tell our website whether you've accepted our analytics cookies or not, and that you want us to remember that decision.

The other cookies we set are lastvisit=XXXXXXXXXXX (a big long number). This tells us in milliseconds when you were last on our website, so we can show or not show you particular things without repeatedly annoying you.

When you click on particular deals on our website, we will also set a few cookies, so that we can show the deal to you later on our website.

These are: dealid=xxxxx (a number unique to the particular deal), mrc=xx (a number with the monthly cost of the plan), contractlength=xx (a number with the length of the contract) and data=xx (how much data in GB the deal came with).

When you first visit we'll ask you if you want to accept all our cookies, just analytics cookies, or just our functionality cookies. The choice is yours.

And the site will work the same no matter what you choose (although you will be asked about your cookie choices on each page if you don't accept our functionality cookies, because there's no other way of us knowing and we won't be able to show you any recent deals you've selected at the top of the page).

None of our functionality cookies serve any other purpose than what we've said above. They store no personal information about you and they're not shared with third parties.
