Find out which low-cost mobile operators in the UK we rank best for quality coverage, data speeds, flexibility and customer service. Last updated: 4th February 2026

What we’re looking for in a low-cost network

We’re comparing quality, not lowest prices

Coverage, speeds, benefits and serviceSkip to our best choices

This guide isn’t a deal comparison page. We’re not trying to show you who has the cheapest deals today (use our tool here for that).

We know all of the mobile networks here offer more or less similarly priced plans. Instead, we’re looking at what you actually get with each provider with your low-cost deal.

How’s their coverage, speeds, extra features, roaming and more? Do they put prices up? Which run credit checks? What’s their customer service like?

There’s a lot to think about, to avoid the old expression: buy cheap, buy twice. So below, we’ve looked at the whole package each budget network offers and ranked them all.

The UK’s best cheap networks

1pMobile offer the highest quality network experience

This isn’t a price comparison page. 1pMobile do not offer the very cheapest deals. But value is what you get for your money. And we don’t think 1p can be beaten for that.

1pMobile get you identical coverage to EE (see for yourself here). You get uncapped 4G/5G speeds comparable to being on EE direct. And extra network features like WiFi calling and now also eSIM.

They’re set up really well for people watching their finances too. There are no annual price rises. No contracts. No credit checks. You can pause your plan if you need a break. Or change plans any time.

And 1p are great for avoiding extra charges too. You can only overspend if you actually add credit. And you can use a generous 14GB of your data to roam in the EU too.

Add to that the fact you can phone their UK-based customer service for free, and we think there’s no other cheap UK mobile network that beats 1p’s overall package.

spusu run 1pMobile pretty close for overall quality

Excellent speeds via the EE networkSee their 5G page

(opens in new window)

If this was purely a price comparison, spusu would be higher than 1pMobile. They’re pretty much always the cheapest 1-month plan provider on EE. And their prize freeze FAQ here shows they don’t raise prices.

You’ll get identical coverage to the UK’s largest network EE (check for yourself with their map here). Speeds are uncapped and comparable with EE. Their WiFi calling now works well. eSIM is great too.

There’s no credit check to join spusu. Their spending caps give you the most control. But you can’t pause plans if money’s tight. Plus you have to phone them to change deals rather than do it online.

Their UK customer service agents are excellent. And all plans include at least some roaming in the EU (though usually not as much as 1pMobile).

Overall, there’s a lot to like for people on a budget with spusu, strongly led by the low monthly cost of their plans. A little more flexibility would be very welcome though.

SMARTY are really well set up for people on a budget

Superfast 5G through ThreeSee expected speeds

at SMARTY.co.uk
(opens in new window)

If your finances change month to month, SMARTY could be your best choice. They were set up by Three specifically to give budget-conscious customers a fair and flexible way to get on their network.

It’s easy to pause your plan online (for up to 6 months) if you need a financial break. You can move up or down plans. There’s no credit check or price rises. And it’s impossible to overspend without buying an add-on.

Network-wise, you benefit from Three’s much improved coverage (check your area here), after investing literally billions in the last decade. You also get fast 4G/5G and extras like WiFi calling.

Customer service isn’t as comprehensive as the providers above. SMARTY keep their prices down by making you do everything online. But there’s little to go wrong. It’s a fair trade-off for a cheap network.

And lastly, we find SMARTY’s inclusive EU roaming nice and generous. You can use up to 12GB of your data there every month. That puts them in the upper half of the best UK networks for EU roaming.

Talkmobile are the best low-cost network on Vodafone

at talkmobile.co.uk
(opens in new window)

On price alone, Talkmobile deserve to be near the top of the list but we also genuinely rate them as a quality network to join – especially if you’re after a low-cost alternative to joining Vodafone directly.

Talkmobile have so much of what you want in place. Fast speeds via Vodafone, identical coverage. Their network extras are slick too like WiFi calling and now even eSIM.

There is no credit check to join Talkmobile (just an ID check). They don’t do price rises. 1-month contracts mean you can change plan up or down but you can’t pause it.

If we had to fault Talkmobile, it would be that their EU roaming is a little on the mean side. You only get 5GB of your monthly data to use there, before you pay extra. But otherwise, a really sound low-cost provider.

iD Mobile are the best budget operator for EU roaming

A suitcase and roam free wording in iD Mobile branding

Cheap roaming, even beyond the EU See all countries

at idmobile.co.uk
(opens in new window)

This guide isn’t about finding the lowest current prices. If it was, iD Mobile would be a lot higher up. They almost always have market-leading deals on 1-month plans, especially our exclusives:

There’s a lot to like for people on a budget. iD paved the way for spending caps to avoid shock bills. And their EU roaming is excellent. Use up to 30GB per month in Europe and a few countries beyond.

But there are some things to know. You will have to pass a credit check to join iD. Their out-of-plan costs are expensive. And there’s no ability to pause your plan if you find money’s short one month.

As long as you don’t mind that, iD are a great way to access the superfast 5G network from Three. Their eSIMs get you connected fast. And iD Mobile had extras like WiFi calling way before other cheap providers.

Other cheaper networks available

Lyca Mobile just need to add WiFi calling as a feature

eSIM in Lyca Mobile branding

We do really like their eSIM featureHow it works

at lycamobile.co.uk
(opens in new window)

Again, Lyca aren’t a bad choice for a cheap network. We’re big fans of their eSIMs. And we like the coverage through EE. It’s just there are more complete options available for similar prices.

The key feature missing on Lyca is WiFi calling. It’s pretty much a must on networks now. It means you’re more like to hit indoor blackspots for calls and texts. Fortunately, 4G calling does work well.

Lyca’s customer service isn’t that great either really. At least you can phone them up. But we’ve found the agents aren’t always that knowledgeable and we’d have difficulties cancelling SIMs before.

Overall then, Lyca can definitely still be worth considering. But are they the best budget operator in the UK? No.

Lebara are very cheap but they do lack features

Screenshot of Lebara's WiFi calling FAQs

Lebara lack slickness of other networksLearn more

at lebara.co.uk
(opens in new window)

Much of Lebara is set up very well for people on a budget. There are no credit checks. You can change plan online month-to-month. And we really like that you can pause plans too. They also include loads of roaming.

But this guide is about overall quality for the money, not just out-and-out cheapness. And Lebara have a few things counting against them, compared to the providers above.

WiFi calling and 4G calling are pretty much must-have features now. Neither of these just work out of the box with Lebara. And when you do get them working, they’re not particularly reliable.

There’s no eSIM for all devices yet on Lebara either. We can see plenty of people still being fine on Lebara. But they definitely lack some of the quality that cheap providers further up our rankings have.

giffgaff, VOXI, Sky, Ecotalk and Tesco aren’t really low-cost

No mid-contract price rises written on a pink background

Contract plans don’t go up in priceSee 18-month plans

at giffgaff.com
(opens in new window)

Although this guide isn’t purely about price, we’d say you have to draw a line somewhere about what counts as a low-cost network. And we’d say giffgaff, VOXI, Sky and Tesco don’t really fit the bill.

They are certainly cheaper to join than their main network counterparts. But we’d put them firmly in the mid-range of prices, so haven’t included them in our rankings above.

Out of them, VOXI and giffgaff are the most flexible, giving you the ability to pause plans if you need a break. giffgaff only promise no price rises on contract SIMs.

Tesco and Sky are both contract based. They require credit checks, there’s no stopping them once they’re started and both are liable to put prices up mid-contract (apart from Clubcard deals).

Overall, we’d say avoid the myth that these networks are low-cost and suitable for people on a tight budget. They’re not particularly.
