If you want to use your phone in the EU without paying extra, Lyca Mobile are an excellent choice. Every one of their plans includes roaming in all these EU countries at no added cost.

But when things look generous, people naturally want to know if there’s a catch. So in this guide, we’ll explain exactly what Lyca’s EU roaming does and doesn’t cover.

Their fair usage policies are generous vs other networks

The first thing to know is that you can’t just use your full UK allowance of minutes, texts and data when using your phone in the EU. Lyca have a fair usage policy that limits how much you can use each month abroad.

On most plans, you can use up to 12GB of your data while in the EU, if your UK plan includes that much in the first place. For smaller plans, your roaming data limit is simply your usual UK allowance. Unlimited plans give you 35GB while away.

You also get up to 2000 minutes and 2000 texts while you’re away. That’s pretty generous compared to other networks. And most people won’t even come close to hitting those limits on a short trip.

These limits cover what you can use without paying extra. You can still use your phone after that, but you’ll need to pay at these rates. You also can’t use your phone as a personal hotspot while roaming.

You can also use your international calls while in the EU

Lyca Mobile are well known for being an international network. Most of their UK plans include at least 100 international minutes for calling countries in Europe and beyond, from the UK.

And we really like that you can still make international calls while roaming in the EU, at no extra cost. This applies even when you’re calling a country outside the EU.

Get a deal with international minutes

So for example, if you’re on holiday in Spain and want to call family in India using your international minutes, you can. You still get most of your usual benefits, even while you’re abroad.

This is actually pretty unusual. Most networks wouldn’t support this, as it gets too complicated for them to make arrangements internationally. So it’s a nice bonus that makes Lyca’s EU roaming even better.

Just keep in mind that it’s only your data that’s free to use while you’re there. Calls, texts and any other services will cost you extra (see latest rates here). In the EU, those are included.
